Time management is a category error. Not entirely, there is genuine value in understanding how you spend your hours and in designing the structure of your day deliberately. But the productivity conversation has been so thoroughly dominated by time that it has largely missed the variable that actually determines quality of output: energy. More precisely: the physiological state in which you encounter any given unit of time. Sixty minutes of focused, regulated, high-capacity work and sixty minutes of depleted, anxious, distracted motion through the same calendar slot are not the same thing. Treating them as equivalent, treating all hours as equivalent, is the fundamental error of time-management culture.
Ultradian Rhythms and the Truth About Your Energy
The body does not operate at a constant level of alertness. It cycles. The ultradian rhythm, the ninety-to-one-hundred-and-twenty-minute cycle that governs alertness and focus throughout the waking day, means that your peak cognitive window occurs approximately every ninety minutes, with a natural dip in between. Most productivity systems treat this rhythm as an obstacle to be overcome through caffeine or willpower. What the somatic approach I develop in Somatic Productivity treats it as is information. The dip is recovery time. Working through it without recovery does not eliminate the cycle; it borrows from the next peak.

The Recovery Problem
Recovery, in the somatic productivity framework, does not mean leisure. It means physiological restoration, the active down-regulation of sympathetic activation and the restoration of ventral vagal capacity for the next cycle of focused work. Email is not recovery. Social media is not recovery. A conversation that requires emotional labour is not recovery. These activities maintain or increase the sympathetic activation level, which means you enter the next work cycle without having genuinely recovered.
Recovery looks like: a short walk, ideally in natural light. Five minutes of breath work. A period of genuine sensory input below the threshold of cognitive demand. In Somatic Productivity, I call this the resourcing window, the deliberate gap between effort cycles in which the nervous system is not just resting but actively restoring. Design it in, or lose it anyway in diminishing returns.
Task Sequencing as Energy Management
If energy state determines quality of output, then sequencing tasks by the energy state they require, rather than by deadline, urgency, or the anxiety hierarchy of the inbox, is a significant lever. High-cognition creative work requires the regulated, alert ventral vagal state. This work should sit at the beginning of your peak ultradian window.
Emotionally demanding interactions are better placed after the high-cognition block. Administrative and logistical tasks, email, scheduling, approvals, sit appropriately in the ultradian dip, when cognitive capacity is naturally lower and these lower-demand activities are actually a reasonable match for available resource. The principle: sequence tasks by state requirement rather than by external pressure. This produces a different relationship between effort and output than the default approach of working through whatever is loudest in any given moment.
