The Classroom Is a Nervous System: Designing Environments That Make Good Behaviour More Likely

Walk into two different classrooms in the same school, with the same year group, and the behaviour in those two rooms is often strikingly different. Same students. Same school culture. Same policy. Different room, different teacher, different arrangement of furniture, different light, different sound level at the door, and the behaviour is different. This is not coincidence. It is the classroom operating as a nervous system, a complex sensory environment sending constant signals to the bodies inside it, shaping the physiological states that determine what behaviour is available.

Most behaviour management frameworks treat the classroom as a neutral stage on which behaviour happens. The approach I have developed in Designing Behaviour in the Classroom starts with a different premise: the classroom is an active participant in behaviour, not a passive backdrop to it.

The most powerful behaviour intervention in any classroom is the environment itself. It runs before the teacher speaks a word.

What the Environment Is Doing

Porges's concept of neuroception, the nervous system's automatic, pre-conscious scanning of the environment for safety and threat cues, is directly applicable to educational settings. Students are doing it constantly. So are teachers. Environments that send consistent safety cues, predictable sensory inputs, clear spatial organisation, appropriate light levels, low ambient noise, visual order, support the regulated nervous system states in which learning and prosocial behaviour are available. Environments that are unpredictable, visually overwhelming, acoustically dysregulating, or atmospherically tense produce a different set of states, and therefore a different set of behaviours.

The Six Environmental Variables That Matter

In Designing Behaviour in the Classroom, I identify six environmental variables that consistently influence behaviour. Predictability: students who cannot predict what happens next allocate cognitive resource to vigilance rather than learning. Consistent routines, clear signposting of transitions, and predictable adult behaviour reduce the vigilance load. Proximity: the spatial relationship between adults and students, not as control, but as co-regulation, matters. A regulated adult in close physical proximity provides neuroceptive safety cues.

Visual load: heavily decorated walls can create a chronic low-level visual processing demand that competes with attention to instruction, particularly affecting students with sensory processing differences. Acoustic environment: noise levels above 35-40 dB consistently impair comprehension and increase stress. Many school classrooms operate well above this, a systems problem, not a behaviour problem. Seating and spatial arrangement: thoughtful spatial design that accounts for sensory needs and social dynamics is part of behaviour management. Entry and exit: the quality of the transition into the classroom sets the tone. Research from Edutopia (2024) confirming that positive door greetings reduce problems and change the student's experience of the teacher is not a surprise, it is a neuroceptive intervention.

What This Means for SEND

For students with SEND, particularly those with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, or trauma histories, the environmental dimension of behaviour is not one consideration among many. It is often primary. A student with sensory processing differences in a classroom with high visual load, unpredictable acoustic input, and limited spatial predictability may be spending the majority of their available cognitive resource managing the environment before any instruction has been given.

The behaviour that follows, shutdown, agitation, avoidance, disruption, is not defiance. It is an overstretched system doing its best with inadequate conditions. Adjusting the environment for that student is not special treatment. It is accuracy. And it is frequently more effective, more sustainable, and less costly than the behaviour management that becomes necessary when the environment is not adjusted.
